Then his brother provides him with an unexpected chance marriage to a prince of their country's oldest enemy to help bring about peace once and for all. I buy pretty much every novel by this author, so I had to get this one. I expected to see the pragmatic characters who rarely wallow in self pity despite dealing with tough circumstances (and if they are at a breaking point for a page or so, you can be assured that there is a very good reason for that), but boy I did not expect to see them being *that* pragmatic. It made sense of course, because political games, betrayal, terrorism are at the front and center of the plot and I think this is the first book by this author where politics felt so merciless and cold and that is why so real to me. I guess the book is technically a fantasy, because the world is fictitious and there are dragons present as pets in one of the countries, but otherwise I would just characterize it as a political thriller with a love story thrown in and be done with it. It is well done, fast paced, makes you glued to the pages, but I am kind of puzzled about romance. This is not the first book by this author where the characters have arranged marriage, and find respect and love in it - this however is the first book where while I completely believe that the men are suited to each other and I am sure became good friends, I just did not feel much chemistry from them.Product details

The Engineered Throne Unbreakable Soldiers Volume 1 Megan Derr Books Reviews
I just finished this book and can say that it's one of my favorites not just by this author but also of anyone I've so far read in the m/m genre. The story starts out with Vellem traveling to a rival nation in order to marry Prince Perdith and secure peace after years of war between their countries. It starts out with the same premise as your regular marriage of convenience tale, but quickly takes a dark turn with assassination attempts. And when tragedy strikes during their wedding ball, you quickly realize that this isn't going to be your standard fluff piece with no substance.
The story is rife with likable characters. I actually mourned the loss of one particular character who was lost so early on, but it would have been unrealistic if everyone survived. Those who are fans of m/m romances where the main couple just jump into bed soon after meeting will be disappointed, but those who prefer slower build romances will enjoy this hopefully as I did. Though I'm aware there are some who felt the romance was rushed and somewhat tepid, it didn't feel that way to me. Probably because I'm used to this kind of thing from reading far too many historical romances... I kind of thought it was somewhat more realistic seeing as theirs was a marriage of convenience, and both men are of a practical nature. It should also be noted that this has rather explicit content when Vellem and Perdith eventually come together, something which surprised me as I wasn't expecting it based on previous stories I'd read by the author. Be aware though that it doesn't happen till much later in the story. This is more of a standard fantasy novel rather than one that focuses solely on the romance aspect.
I loved the fact that Vellem had moments where he was the opposite of what you would expect as the 'hero' of the story. He made decisions and executed actions that were brutal, but were also in keeping with his background and the backdrop of war the story takes place in. He had moments of insecurity which made him human, and since the story is told from his POV, you can at least understand his actions. I also loved his relationship with his brother, Koit, and enjoyed all of their interactions.
As I mentioned, this has a likable cast and I found Bertin and Kestel especially interesting. They had chemistry leaping off the page even though they were in only a handful of scenes together, just begging for their own tale.
The setting has medieval, regency, and middle earth elements. There are dragons, and mentions of faeries, goblins, trolls and ogres, although save for the dragons, those other creatures don't make an actual appearance in the story.
Anyway, well worth the money I spent on the book. There were some (minor) grammatical errors / typos / missing words here and there but they didn't really distract me all that much. Yes, it's not perfect, but I'm still giving it 5 stars as I enjoyed it completely.
3.5 stars.
The Engineered Throne turned out to be a little different than what I was expecting. I went in thinking the main focus of this novel was going to be on the arranged marriage (a theme I generally love in m/m romances) and the two main characters falling in love with one another. While this certainly did happen, it wasn't until after the halfway point. However, this novel was aptly named as it largely focused on Vellem entering his new country and gradually coming into the leadership role in which he abruptly finds himself. The first several challenges revolve around attacks on Vellem and his comrades as well as obstacles Vellem must overcome in order to fully come into his position. When he does meet his husband, Perdith, half of the book has already passed and circumstances occur that prevents Perdith from having a major role until about the 70% mark. I was a little disappointed at such a late foray into romance, but once the two got together they made up for the wait. There were the nervous attractions and little sparks that make the build up heartwarming and when the relationship turned more serious it felt believable and realistic. Because the love scenes between Vellem and Perdith were so well written I wished Ms. Derr had devoted more time to the two of them as a couple. Other reviewers have said they only see the two men as being good friends, however I thought the chemistry between them was palpable and easily saw them becoming comfortable and loving husbands to one another. Additionally, this novel has plenty of action, political enmity, and conflict to keep you entertained if you're interested in that, though I found myself skipping over a few scenes as my interest began to wane.
There were several grammatical and other errors scattered throughout the book which I found mildly distracting, but other than that this is a very decent novel, especially if you're fond of fantasy, rival kingdoms, and the struggles inherent in becoming a leader of a former enemy country. Those looking for a stronger focus on the romance will be in for a letdown as it only comprises a small percentage of the book. This is more a story of Vellem and his "engineered throne". I gave this four rather than three stars because they writing was good, the plot was solid, and the romance--when the story finally got there--was engaging and great to read.
